Tibetan language classes will be divided into three levels:
- Beginner level: Tibetan listening, Speaking, and the writing system.
- Intermediate and Advanced levels: Tibetan reading and more-advanced grammar.
-
Elective course and lectures: Tibetan history, folklore, religion, customs, and culture.
Language opportunities:
-
Daily living.
- Organized recreation and visits to become acquainted with Tibet and its people.
Students should arrive during the first two weeks of September (Fall Semester) or March (Spring Semester) for registration and to adjust to Lhasa's altitude and to the campus living situation. Classes normally begin by the middle of the month and continue for 18 weeks.
From May through August: One and two-month privately arranged Tibetan study programs are available.
Requirements: Six or more participants attending as a group, sponsored or recommended by a school or other organization. COURSES
• Tibetan Language: Listening and speaking useful phrases and sentences.
• Lectures (in English): Tibetan history customs and culture.
The doors of the foreign students' building are locked shut each night at 11.30pm, so students and staff have to be back by then. If anyone comes later, the staff who work there during the day are forced to wake up to unlock the doors, which is unfair to them. Unfortunately this is a cultural tradition in Lhasa these days - most buildings and facilities lock their gates at this time, and as visitors all students have to comply with this.
Tutorials: Students will be expected to arrange private tutorials in their spare time with local teachers/language partners. Names and contact details will be provided by the University or by the Course Directors. The fee for these tutorials is normally $2-3 per hour depending on the teacher's experience.
Specialist Classes: Classes on additional subjects such as Tibetan art, instrumental music, specialized textual study, regional dialects, etc, can usually be arranged on request. The additional fee for a twice-weekly private specialist class would be negotiable, at approx. $100-200 per course (25 yn or $3 per teaching hour) divided by the number of students in the class.
Classroom Location: Classes are held in the same building as the student rooms.
Facilities: Each student will get a single or a double room with a separate kitchen and toilet, with gas stove. Each room has a television with cable connections to some 50 Chinese and Tibetan channels. A restaurant providing midday meals is attached to the student dormitory at approx 5-8 yuan ($1) per meal, and a student canteen is available on the campus. There are numerous shops, tea-houses and restaurants within 2-3 minutes of the dormitory. Western restaurants and tourist facilities are about 15-20 minutes walk away.
Washing machines are available in the dormitory. Laundry and photocopying facilities are available within 2-3 minutes walk. Email facilities can be arranged on the premises or are available at numerous local internet bars. Private sports and swimming facilities are available about 15 minutes away from the campus by bicycle or taxi.
Location: The main Tibetan areas and traditional temples of the city (the Barkor) are about 15-20 minutes walk from the University. Students will be free to visit local eating-houses and shops and to converse with people there in order to practice their language skills.
Excursions: Students will be able to travel in those areas of Tibet or China that are officially open to tourists before or after the course if they wish. During the course they can usually make journeys to nearby areas within Tibet (such as Drigung, Retring, Samye, Namtso and Shigatse) at weekends once the itineraries have been approved by the University staff. In several cases government regulations require the students to pay for a guide and driver to go with them on these trips.
Medical note: Although there are numerous hospitals and clinics in the city, students must have full medical insurance coverage for the duration of their journey and the course, including full evacuation and repatriation cover. Advice on altitude adjustment and other issues will be provided to the students before departure.
