WLE Chinese Language & Business Program


On-site Study Trips
The following illustrates some of the speakers and companies visited during past
on-site field trips for the WLE Business Course.


IKEA
Speaker: Ulf Smedberg – Marketing Manager

IKEA retailing, with its Swedish roots, is based on a franchise system. Inter IKEA Systems B.V., located in Delft, The Netherlands, is the owner and franchisor of the IKEA Concept. IKEA stores are operated by a number of different franchisees in 30 countries.

The IKEA Group is a private group of companies owned by a charitable foundation in The Netherlands. The IKEA Group is active in developing, purchasing, distributing and selling IKEA products. The IKEA group is the biggest group of franchisees operating over 100 IKEA stores. The Management Services to the IKEA Group are provided by IKEA International A/S in Humlebaek, Denmark

There are about 12,000 products in the total IKEA product range. Each store carries a selection of these 12,000 products depending on store size. The core range is the same world wide. IKEA opened its first store in China in 1998.




CARREFOUR

Speaker: Guillaume Brouwet - Beijing Manager of Operations

The largest retailer in Europe and second largest (to Wal-Mart) worldwide, Carrefour operates over 9200 stores in 32 countries. Geared towards hypermarket, supermarket, and hard discount retail operations, Carrefour's strategy consists of building group market share in each country in which it does business by expanding the type of retailing best suited to the local market and by taking advantage of the way the three formats complement one another. Carrefour does over 50% of its business in Europe; its Asia operations account for 11%. Carrefour opened its first hypermarket in China in 1995, and now has 35 hypermarkets in 15 of China's 17 largest cities. In 2000 alone, Carrefour opened 6 stores, all in partnership with local operators.




SONY ERICSSON MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS (BMC)

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (BMC) began China operations in August 2002, a year after the joint venture was formed and Ericsson announced to exit the handset market. Sony Ericsson China focuses on handset design, production, sales and support; the company also set up an R&D center in Beijing, one of four in the world. Combining strengths from Sony (entertainment and design) and Ericsson (mobile communications technology and R&D), the company wants to create a new mobile segment with imaging, entertainment and interactivity. Since its founding, Sony Ericsson has launched several handsets with features designed for local customers.

The BMC Plant covers 30,000 square meters and with 4000 employees with production running 24-hours a day, 360 days per year. In Beijing BMC has the Customer and Research Center as well as Mobile Phone Production delivering to 90 countries.




AMECO - Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Corporation

Speaker: Mr. Manfred Gaertner – Executive Director of the Finance Division

AMECO is a joint venture between Air China and Lufthansa located at Beijing Capital Airport. It was set up on May 2, 1989 and became operational on August 1 in the same year. The registered capital is 87.53 million USD of which Air China holds 60% and Lufthansa 40%. The main business of AMECO is to perform maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft frame, engine and components. It also offers engineering support, training services and material supply.

AMECO is the first and largest joint venture, which offers the aero-engineering services in the Chinese aviation industry. It has 3,700 employees and the fixed assets are more than 2 billion RMB. It is the first enterprise in China civil aviation that holds certificates approved by CAAC, FAA, JAA and acquired ISO9002 certificate.




TRADEX CONVERTING (Langfang) Co. Ltd
Speaker: Per Montelin – General Manager

Tradex Converting (Langfang) Co Ltd was founded in 1965 and has extensive experience in the telecom market. Since the early 90's, Tradex has focused on meeting the demands of the cellular-phone OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer), and today is the leading global supplier to this industry with a worldwide market share around 35%. Located in Langfang, Hebei, one hour southeast of Beijing, Tradex established itself as a fully owned subsidiary and today is the second largest tax payer in Langfang.

Tradex strives to live up to its motto as the “Easiest Company to do Business with.” As Tradex delivers parts to the cellular phone industry, their customers demanded local suppliers to the production line in China. In 1998 Tradex obtained a business license and established itself in Langfang to serve customers in China and other regions of Asia. Tradex’s strategic location is an hour drive from production facilities of Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia. Tradex Converting (Langfang) has been profitable from its first year and grows over 100% each year. It currently has over 700 employees and 11,000m2 of office and production space.

Tradex prides itself in the telecom industry for its unique die-cut self-adhesive components for shielding, sealing, tightening, reflecting, and mounting. They are the market leader for components to the mobile phone industry and are far larger than their largest competitor. By 2005 Tradex had expanded its operations all over the world. They currently have operations in Sweden, US, Mexico, Brazil, Hungary, China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan.


DRAGON SEAL WINERY
Speaker: Jerome Sabate – Marketing Manager

Dragon Seal Winery was established in 1994 as a joint-venture between Groupe Pernod Ricard and Beijing Winery, but since 2001 the Winery has been a fully state-owned enterprise. Mr. Jerome Sabate, the marketing manager, presented WLE participants with a history of the Winery, tour of the facilities, and wine tasting of four of their wines.

Dragon Seal is one of the only wineries in China that produces all of their wine from 100% Chinese-grown grapes. Located 150km northwest of Beijing, Dragon Seal has its own vineyards in Huailai, Hebei Province. Annual rainfall is low and the gravelly soil produces one of China’s best Cabernet Sauvignons. In 1999 Dragon Seal Cabernet Sauvignon (Vintage 1997) won “the Best Chinese Red Wine” at the Hong Kong International Wine Competition.


E-NORBUS
Speaker: Norbert Cheng – Founder

E-norbus was established in 2000 and is headquartered in Beijing. It has a diverse and expert team of artists, writers, and programmers working in wireless technologies. They develop their own applications, and their multi-platform delivery system is compatible with all major protocols and standards throughout the world.

E-norbus services are available globally. They have a strong operator relationships with China Mobile, China Unicom, and other regional operators such as KDDI in Japan, Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan and Hutch CAT in Thailand.

E-nurbus works with foreign content providers and gaming companies to adapt and distribute their products in the regional markets. In addition, they develop and distribute wireless applications on an OEM basis through third parties including global and regional handset manufacturers, foreign content aggregators, and regional mobile operators.


BLUE ZOO BEIJING
Speaker: Mr. Chiam Tun Cheng – General Manager

Blue Zoo Beijing is the largest aquarium of its type in Asia and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Richina Pacific Limited. Blue Zoo International has the majority interest in Beijing Gongti Richina Underwater World Entertainment Co Ltd, a Chinese-foreign joint venture that operates Blue Zoo Beijing. The Chinese partner in Blue Zoo Beijing is the Beijing Sports Service Centre for Workers.

Blue Zoo Beijing's underwater community boasts thousands of ocean and marine estuary creatures, including sharks, rays, eels, coral reef fish, lobsters, sea horses, starfish and many others from all tropical levels. Blue Zoo Beijing is the first walk-through aquarium established in Beijing. Since its opening in 1997, Blue Zoo Beijing has received over 8 million visitors and has over $1 million cash flow each year.


HAVI FOOD SERVICES
Speaker: Jimmy Zhang – Distribution Manager

Havi was originally founded in 1974 to provide the distribution services to McDonald’s restaurants in the Chicago metropolitan area. Today, Havi specializes in logistics, distribution, equipment leasing and maintenance, food processing, packaging and administrative services, and promotional marketing.

Operating in 40 countries worldwide, Havi Food Services is the consolidator and distributor of most of the McDonald imports in China. The YUM! and McDonald’s distribution centers are located in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area.
