Mr. Daniel Cheng is the Manager Director for Symantec in China and Hong Kong. Mr. Cheng is responsible for the overall growth and development of Symantec's business in China and Hong Kong.

Zhaopin.com, China's leading recruitment web site, was founded in 1997 by Alliance Consulting Ltd, the first foreign head hunting company in Mainland China. Zhaopin.com is a bilingual job board that publicizes real time, on line, a vast amount of job information for Chinese and foreign companies and job seekers. The site provides a professional resume center and an easy-to-use job search free-of-charge to job seekers. It is also a source of career development, training and education, and information for human resources companies. Zhaopin.com offers executives, search services and employment information for candidates and clients.
Speaker: Mr. Alan Reid - Managing Director - Reid Corporation
Topic: “The Role of the Real Estate Market in China and How Recent Legislation Has Effected It”
Mr. Reid is a law graduate of the University of Western Australia. He has lived and worked in China and Hong Kong since 1985 and has significant experience in conducting business in those places. He speaks Mandarin and resides in Beijing..
Between 1992 and 1995, a peak period in the expansion of the Australian-Chinese bilateral trade and investment relationship, Mr. Reid was Minister Commercial and Senior Trade Commissioner at the Australian Embassy in Beijing. He has developed a wide range of political and commercial contacts including a diverse range of Minister and Vice Minister-level bureaucrats and senior corporate managers. His contacts include specialists working in most sectors of the Chinese economy.
Following his period of service in the Embassy, Mr. Reid was appointed Chief Operating Officer, Foster's China Limited, a division of Foster's Brewing Group of Melbourne, a position he occupied until June 1998. This company is one of the world's largest brewers with significant operations on four continents and net yearly brewing revenue in excess of USD3 billion. In this role, Mr. Reid was responsible for all aspects of management of the three joint venture breweries operated by Foster's in China including formulation of strategy, financial control, production, marketing, sales, and human resources.
In late 1998, Mr. Reid established Reid Corporation (Beijing) Ltd, an investment company and advisory with multinational clients, its office in Beijing. Today, this company has a wide range of business partners and clients involved in business in China including Nokia China Investment Co. Ltd (Finland – telecommunications), Cadbury Asia (Australia – Confectionery), Bilfinger Berger AG (Germany – Construction), Lowe Enterprises (USA – Real Estate), Barber International (USA – Railways), iPIX (USA – Internet), Orbital Engine (Australia – Environment), Pelorus Navigation Systems (Canada – Airport Equipment) and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd (Canada – Mining).
As a result of the extensive period of time he has worked in China, Mr. Reid has acquired invaluable practical experience. He knows at first hand the challenges of this difficult and rapidly changing market and how to employ strategies to maximize the potential for profitable engagement and minimize risk.
Speaker: Mr. Diarmuid O'Brien - Lawyer - Coudert Brothers
Topic:“Changes in Basic Investment Laws arising from WTO Accession, China and its WTO Commitments regarding Investment Policies”
Coudert Brothers has been active in legal matters involving the People's Republic of China since the establishment of their Hong Kong office in 1972. Coudert Brothers was the first foreign law firm to establish a permanent presence in Beijing in 1979, and the first foreign law firm to be approved by the Ministry of Justice to establish a law office in Beijing in 1992. In association with Coppens Van Ommeslaghe & Faurès, Coudert Brothers is now also represented in Shanghai since 2001.
Coudert Brothers' China practice acts on behalf of foreign companies directly investing in China as well as Chinese enterprises in a variety of international matters. This includes public offerings of securities, international lending transactions, foreign commercial litigation, and regulatory administrative proceedings.
Coudert Brothers has developed considerable experience in the field of Chinese tax law. The firm assisted the Ministry of Finance of China in the study of foreign taxation systems through the hosting of a series of biannual seminars dating back to 1979. Three of the firm's lawyers specializing in the area of taxation are co-authors of the Bureau of National Affairs tax portfolio Business Operations in the People's Republic of China. In addition, the firm's tax experts in both the Beijing and Shanghai offices maintain close supervision over China tax developments by meeting with Chinese tax authorities and publishing and speaking on recent changes in Chinese tax laws.

Speaker: Mr. Manfred Gaertner – Executive Director of the Finance Division – AMECO
AMECO is a joint venture between Air China and Lufthansa located at Beijing Capital Airport. It was set up on May 2, 1989 and became operational on August 1 in the same year. The registered capital is 87.53 million USD of which Air China holds 60% and Lufthansa 40%. The main business of AMECO is to perform maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft frame, engine and components. It also offers engineering support, training services and material supply.
AMECO is the first and largest joint venture, which offers the aero-engineering services in the Chinese aviation industry. It has 3,700 employees and the fixed assets are more than 2 billion RMB. It is the first enterprise in China civil aviation that holds certificates approved by CAAC, FAA, JAA and acquired ISO9002 certificate.
Mr. Manfred Gaertner is originally from Germany where he joined Lufthansa in 1982. Since 1995, Mr. Gaertner has been vice president of Lufthansa City Line being in charge of accounting and management. He has also been involved with Human Resources with Lufthansa German Airlines.

IKEA retailing, with its Swedish roots, is based on a franchise system. Inter IKEA Systems B.V., located in Delft, The Netherlands, is the owner and franchisor of the IKEA Concept. IKEA stores are operated by a number of different franchisees in 30 countries.
The IKEA Group is a private group of companies owned by a charitable foundation in The Netherlands. The IKEA Group is active in developing, purchasing, distributing and selling IKEA products. The IKEA group is the biggest group of franchisees operating over 100 IKEA stores. The Management Services to the IKEA Group are provided by IKEA International A/S in Humlebaek, Denmark
There are about 12,000 products in the total IKEA product range. Each store carries a selection of these 12,000 products depending on store size. The core range is the same world wide. IKEA opened its first store in China in 1998.
Speaker: Mr. Sam Goodman – Founder - Sammie's
Sammie's is a Canadian-owned western food service company in Beijing. They provide food services for meetings, presentations, picnics, staff morale boosters, gift packs and travel packs. Sammie's is open for delivery for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also have an online ordering service which runs 24 hours a day. Sammie's began with a Canadian and a cafe in 1997 at the Beijing Language and Culture University. Its goal was to provide people a place to hang out and enjoy homemade western food. As the customer demand for Sammie's original and fresh sandwiches, salad, bagels, brownies, muffins and cookies grew, Sammie's set up a central kitchen in 1998 in Beijing's Chao Yang District downtown area. Beijing Sammie's was voted Beijing's 1999 No. 1 western food delivery company by City Weekend.
Sammie's goal is to providing companies and their employees with solutions to make their working environment better.
Speaker: Mr. Robert Parris - Managing Director - Ericsson
Ericsson has been active worldwide since 1876 and today has around 85,000 employees in more than 140 countries. The headquarters are located in Stockholm, Sweden. Mr. Kurt Hellstrom is the CEO and President of Ericsson.
Ericsson is the largest mobile systems supplier in the world. The world's 10 largest mobile operators are Ericsson customers and some 40% of all mobile calls are made through Ericsson systems. Ericsson provides total solutions covering everything from systems and applications to services and core technology for mobile handsets. With Sony Ericsson complete mobile multi-media products are provided.
Mr. Robert Parris is the Managing Director at Ericsson Mobile Communication Co., Ltd Beijing Office.
Speaker: Guillaume Brouwet - Beijing Manager of Operations – Carrefour
The largest retailer in Europe and second largest (to Wal-Mart) worldwide, Carrefour operates over 9200 stores in 32 countries. Geared towards hypermarket, supermarket, and hard discount retail operations, Carrefour's strategy consists of building group market share in each country in which it does business by expanding the type of retailing best suited to the local market and by taking advantage of the way the three formats complement one another. Carrefour does over 50% of its business in Europe; its Asia operations account for 11%. Carrefour opened its first hypermarket in China in 1995, and now has 35 hypermarkets in 15 of China's 17 largest cities. In 2000 alone, Carrefour opened 6 stores, all in partnership with local operators.

Professor Wang is WLE's Chief Representative. He is responsible for WLE's China legal, government and corporate affairs. Apart from this position, Professor Wang serves as a Deputy member of the Beijing People's Congress; an Arbitrator of International Trade in the Shan Dong Zi Arbitration Committee and a standing member of China's Association of International Trade attached to MOFTEC (Ministry of Foreign trade and economic Cooperation).
As a professor of International Business in the University of International Business and Economics, Professor Wang is one of the senior appointed lecturers of WLE's China Business programs. He has written and co-authored numerous publications including “International Trade Contract and its Performance”, “Handbook on International Trade and Finance (co-authored), and “International Trade Practice (co-authored)”. His outstanding achievements have earned him several awards including the “Honor of Leading Academic in International Business in Beijing” and China's “National Outstanding Teacher Award”.
As a visiting professor, he has been appointed to lecture International Business in universities abroad including to University of Illinois Business School, (July 2000 to August 2001) and University of Western Sydney, School of Marketing, International Business and Asian Studies, Australia (Feb 2000 to July 2000). Professor Wang's extensive work and academic experience has been an invaluable source of knowledge regarding China's business and political developments, for WLE students particularly those participating in the China Business program.
